Tom was raised by house flippers in Northern California and his earliest memories are of renovations and of old houses being brought back to life. So, home, for him, isn’t as much a place as it is a process. That is how real estate started coursing through his blood: buying, fixing, selling, moving on to the next. It’s a process of seeing the potential in the bones of a building, an ability he is happy to share with others.
Equipped with two fine arts degrees, he moved to Brooklyn in the 1990’s and applied what he was taught in childhood to the Williamsburg live-work arena. He renovated several historic buildings and re-purposed many raw spaces into working studio spaces. Tom loved the old industrial waterfront, filled as it was with all kinds of resources and opportunities. But that was Williamsburg then, not now.
At the time he operated a small fabrication shop in an old mortuary and casket factory servicing the NYC theater and art world. He worked behind the scenes in many galleries, art centers, and theaters throughout New York and the Hudson region including the Berkshires and the Adirondacks. He started his family but realized that Brooklyn no longer had the room and space they needed.
It was time to move on and visiting Ulster County, Tom saw historic warehouses, waterfronts, mountains, and a rich artistic tradition. He recognized everything that he had known and thought “I am home”
